Initially a vital waterway for Native Americans and later settlers, the river played a crucial role in the lumber and meatpacking industries, with the Illinois & Michigan Canal connecting it to major trade routes. Further developments like the Sanitary and Ship Canal and Cal-Sag Channel shaped the modern river system. The history of Chicago's River West neighborhood is deeply connected to its immigrant roots, with Scandinavian settlers at the intersections of Milwaukee, Halsted, and Ogden, and Norwegians further down the street. Polish and Ukrainian immigrants settled northwest of the area, while Italian settlers moved south. Once known as West Town, River West was part of Polish Downtown and one of Chicago's most populous areas until the 1960s. The neighborhood's rich history is preserved in its buildings, making a guided tour a great way to appreciate its diverse cultural heritage.


River West has since evolved into a modern, vibrant residential area.
