Why We Love Fish Bar

May 14, 2017

About-

We’re often asked what our favorite Lakeview lunch spots are. The answer usually leads back to one restaurant … Fish Bar. There’s something special about this tiny 30 seat, almost all counter fish shack. Maybe it’s the simplicity of its décor, or the funky tunes playing overhead. Or maybe it’s the food. These components make it, for us, one of our staple stops in Chicago.

Let’s be honest, Chicago is in the middle of the country, and while we have a lake, it’s not the ocean. A deeply rooted nostalgia for eastern seaside fare drove Chef Michael Kornick and business partner David Morton to open Fish Bar, and we’re sure glad to have it.

Lakeview is the closest thing you’ll get to seafaring life in the city. We are surrounded by harbors, boats, and lakefront, which made Fish Bar’s location a no-brainer. In particular, we look forward to the summer months where we dine on picnic tables just outside the restaurant. Pups can join you on this sidewalk oasis, and if you close your eyes, for a moment you might feel as if you’ve been whisked away to Maine on a warm summer’s day.

The Food-

Ok, can we be honest? We eat at Fish Bar all the time. So much so, that once spring and summer roll around, they consider us regulars. It is for that reason that we’ve basically tried everything on the menu. What’s great about Fish Bar is their simplicity. Our favorite dishes are the ones that stay true to their roots. The blackened white fish sliders and lobster roll always hit the table when we drop in for a visit. But one of our favorite menu items, ironically enough, has nothing to do with fish. We love, love, love the fried chicken sandwich. While we may not order it every time we visit, (ordering poultry at a fish joint just feels wrong) when we do, we enjoy every glorious bite. Ps. We also feel strongly about the tater tots. We can’t enough!

Must Try:

Lobster Roll | celery mayo, spicy slaw

Crabby Patty | old bay mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion

Blackened whitefish Sliders | cajun mayo, lemon, slaw

Calamari | federal hill style

Tater Tots | deep fried goodness

It’s no secret that there are perks to living in downtown Chicago. There’s the walk-to-everything convenience, like grabbing a coffee on your way to the gym, picking up groceries on the walk home, and rarely needing to plan around a commute. Transit access is hard to beat, especially in The Loop, where every CTA line converges. Car-free living comes naturally here, whether you’re heading to work, meeting friends, or exploring the city. This means no traffic, no parking headaches, no wasted time. And boredom? Not an option. Millennium Park. The Art Institute of Chicago. The Chicago Theatre. Michigan Avenue. The Bean. Willis Tower. Festivals, concerts, museums, public art… Culture isn’t something you visit, it’s something you live inside every day. Add in skyline, river, and lake views, and downtown living delivers an unmistakably Chicago experience. But what if you don’t work downtown? What if you want to keep your car? Maybe you’re looking for quieter streets, more neighborhood restaurants and bars, or tree-lined sidewalks where your dog can set the pace. Or maybe downtown Chicago just isn’t your vibe, and that’s okay. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, and each one offers its own version of city living. From strong transit access and walkability to vibrant local scenes and more breathing room at home, there are plenty of Chicago neighborhoods that deliver big-city perks without the downtown feel. Here are some of the best Chicago neighborhoods to live in if you want everything you love about the city, without living downtown.
